Going to the Chapel

No, not me. Sheesh.

My girlfriend is getting married in February, and I'm a bridesmaid. I know, I'm 40 and being called a "maid." I guess "bridesmatron" hasn't caught on yet. Maddy will be the junior bridesmaid. She's going to be so frickin' cute!

Anyway, my friend will sometimes send me links for various dresses. I find myself browsing through the rest of the designer's website looking at dresses. And thinking "WTF?"

For example:

Is dressing like the cake the new thing? I'd be afraid someone would try to slice me.

Rhett, Rhett! If I wore this, I'd probably whack people with my hips as I walked down the aisle.

A new use for grandma's old tablecloths.

And for the bridesmaids:

The 80s called - they want my prom dress back.

I kid you not. This is even too tacky for Vegas.

Got any good wedding fashion stories? Share them, won't you?

Hopefully anyone considering any of those pictures above has at least one good friend to direct them down other avenues. Yikes!

Peach. Tulle. And Taffeta. With peach lace fingerless gloves.

Nuff said.

It has been 15 years and I haven't let her forget that she made me wear that monstrosity.

When I was bridesmaid for my best friend I was about your age. I decided that I was too old to be a 'bridesmaid' and far too young and delectable to be a 'matron of honour' so I called myself 'the best girl'. Try it. It makes people laugh and you feel good.

Royal purple taffeta, off the shoulder. velvet ribbons under the bust. Talk about bad.... I even talked her out of the puffy sleeves and sweetheart neckline. That would have just been ridiculously 80's! and this was less than 8 years ago.

I had to go dress shopping for a wedding I was to be in when I was preggers. The baby would be about a month old at the wedding, but I needed to get my dress ordered. Of course it had to be altered to all hell. And the shoes were the worst.

Is it wrong that I love the second wedding gown, but would never wear it myself?

1979. That should be enough to plant a picture in your mind, but I'll give you a few hints: peach, accordion pleats from an empire waistline, a pill box hat with netting down over my 17-year-old face - and four, count 'em, FOUR bridal showers.
How I disliked her.
(BTW, the groomsmen weren't any luckier: brown tuxes, brown velvet lapels, peach shirts with ruffled fronts...
I shudder to remember...

I wasn't good at taking care of those little details for our wedding - forgot to request a mic for the soloist, etc. (Was that really my fault?)

But for fashion, I had rented one of those poofy things to go under the wedding gown. I don't know why, it just seemed like the thing to do. But I never hung it up; I took it to the church still wadded up in the plastic. So when I put it and the dress on, I had tons of little bumps that wouldn't smooth out. I couldn't use it, but I realized that I looked like a normal bride without all that poofiness. What was I even thinking?
