Wednesday Bites - First One of 2008

I'm getting used to the work week beginning on Wednesday. I wonder how I'll handle actually working a full week?

************

This morning when I left for work it was 7 degrees. It's up to 13 now. The forecast calls for 60 on Saturday. We will probably have a blizzard in April.

************

Highway 40 is officially closed. All reports indicate it's not a big deal...so far. I think this may be similar to when the Pope visited - all hype and no problem. Sidenot - it was 60 when he visited, too. Coincidence?

The ban on smoking in Illinois went into effect yesterday. As an ex-smoker, I can understand the frustration of those who do smoke. Honestly, the fact that smokers were being treated as criminals was one of the reasons I quit. However, I will also enjoy being able to go have a cocktail and not come home smelling like an ashtray.

**********

My brother leaves for Iraq today. He called me yesterday on his way to the airport. Because I don't have enough to cry about lately. Please keep him, and all our servicemen and women in your prayers.

**********

My New Year's resolution is to get back in the good health habit. I'm seriously considering running in the 5 mile St. Patrick's Day run with some friends. Tonight I start the treadmill again. Wish me luck because I've tried to fall off of it several times. Klutzy girl + treadmill = injury waiting to happen.

I was jogging on a regular basis, but fell out of the habit. I need to set a goal to get re-motivated and I've been thinking of running in the St. Pat's Day race. My husband did it in 2005 and it seemed to be an achievable and satisfying goal.

Plus, I made a drunken deal with a dude named Pete while in Iowa in October. My end of the bargain consists of running one 5k with the goal of making it through the race without walking. What better time to honor a drunken deal than on St. Pat's Day!?

Here in my state in Australia we've had bans on smoking indoors that started in restaurants and has slowly over the years crept out to include everything. Pubs and clubs were the last ones to go. I've never smoked so I love it.

You'll find that what will happen is that a culture of ducking outside for smoking breaks will happen. Outside every building clots of people wreathed in smoke will gather, and unless courtesy ashtrays are left near doorways, the footpath/sidewalk will be littered with butts.

Ah well. At least the indoors is breathable!

Thank you, Kim's brother, for your service to this country. Come home safely. God be with you.

Hi Kim,

In the past year I took up running and have gradually increased and achieved my goals...from my first 5K to finishing 2 Half Marathons in 2007. I am currently training for my first Full Marathon in St. Louis on April 6, 2008. You will LOVE running once you get past the painful first couple of miles. It is so good for the mind, body and soul.

I've only commented once but have followed your blog for about a month now. I want you to know that I pray for you and your family. Your posts are beautiful and some bring me to tears. Many of them make me appreciate the small things that are often overlooked in life. I hope that 2008 brings you peace and happiness.

Oh, and you are VERY BRAVE for going within a mile radius of Walmart during the holiday season...I avoid that place like Highway 40 during rush hour! :)
